From 20 minutes to 15 years. Every milestone here names the body that publishes it, and where the CDC and the NHS disagree, you get both.

## Quick answer: the quit smoking timeline

Your heart rate starts dropping within 20 minutes. Carbon monoxide reaches a normal level within 12 to 48 hours. Breathing gets easier around 72 hours, circulation improves over 2 to 12 weeks, and the big risk numbers move at 1, 5, 10 and 15 years. That is the recovery half.

## Why published timelines do not all agree

-   They rest on different evidence. The CDC hour-by-hour figures come from the 2004 Surgeon General's report, while the NHS publishes its own intervals. That is why one puts carbon monoxide at normal after 12 hours and the other after 48.
-   The long-term numbers are population averages compared with people who keep smoking. They describe risk across many people, not a promise about one person.
-   Your own curve depends on how long and how heavily you smoked, your age, and any conditions you already have.
-   One cigarette does not reset the clock to zero. A slip is a moment to plan around, not a reason to start the count again.
